This could be the pivotal moment for me to provide a rational framework for the sometimes irrational and fearful ‘WTF’ I am trying to achieve. My direction change is so far off-piste that it can sometimes be mind-blowing.
I’m trying to category design myself and our business, so having the baseline for all four Capital areas will help create some stability and practical steps for our goals. It will also help us figure out, develop, and get our flywheel going.
All of this was in my head earlier today during an early morning two-hour indoor cycling workout!
And as I was thinking, "Cut yourself some slack. You know you’re off-piste, figuring it out, and pretty much starting from scratch.” This song came on the radio: “Rip It Up and Start Again” by Orange Juice. Classic 1980s UK pop. It’s not quite punk Pirate Christopher, but the title sums it all up. Have a listen - you never know, you might enjoy it :-)
Our category: UK-based specialist recruitment for the fashion sector. By fashion, we mean retailers, suppliers, wholesalers and manufacturers. We set up in 2020 and are building on the co-founder's 20+ years of experience in the sector. I have absolutely no experience in the sector!
Roles recruited: Designers, buyers, merchandisers, garment technologists, pattern cutters, sales, office admin, HR. Level: From entry to director. Company size: SME to PLC.
Some figures for the last two accounting years: 96% of candidates accepted offers. 87% of those candidates are still in the role. 77% of clients repeat instructions. Only 1 rebate was issued.
Co-founder (Lucy) is a star and absolutely spends every day in the service of clients and candidates. It's all about them.
As for the video - just re-watched it. Ah, the UK was a very different place back then. It's still raining though!
Great conversation and I'm excited to learn more in future releases! Tapping into emotions and sharing your stories deeply resonates. It also is highly relatable which adds context to the challenges of pursuing and achieving personal freedom.
The more I learn the more clear it is that identifying your superpower is key to taking a leap.
I literally just wrote this to a former colleague on LinkedIn this morning:
"I'm still trying to make my "project" happen. I'm at my computer everyday plugging away yet despite that I have absolutely nothing to show for it. It's hard. Every once and a while I flinch and go look at jobs and it makes me sick... I can never go back to that. So I'm in between a rock and a hard place and it doesn't seem like there are any good options for me right now. BUT I'll be OK, I still have time. I like to tell myself that when I do find success then this period will have been critical... it's a thought that keeps me warm at night at least :P"
I'm a dad of two littles, 10 yrs in marketing and tech. Quit my very cushy but absolutely soul crushing job last May. I promised myself it was the last time. Christopher's ep on the Lenny pod was a light bulb moment for me. I think even then I realized it was a very personal endeavor. I had to finally be and do ME.
What would it mean to get Paid To Create? EVERYTHING!
Going to run in the woods now and listen to Personal Capital audiobook.
You satisfied the practical & tangible promise for me. I just started The Algebra of Wealth and feel like I might have just got the cliffs notes!
Really looking forward to the next parts... which are when BTW? :)
Also I'd love to hear you talk more about thinker's high because as far as getting high on my own ideas is concerned I might as well change my name to Hunter S. Thompson.
Thank you, Pirates.

Off-piste is often mind-blowing. Irrational. And fearful!
But also worth it.
Happy to be your guides as you category design yourself and your business. What's the category?
(Love the scuba scene in that Orange Juice music video 🎸)
