Dear Friend, Subscriber, and Category Pirate,
Most people wake up every day to build someone else’s dream.
They stick to the “safe” path — one paycheck at a time — too afraid to sail their own ship. They ignore the voice whispering, “Is this all there is?” But deep down, they know the truth.
Relying on someone else’s success for safety is a trap.
This week’s Pirate Jam Session goes straight to the heart of what it takes to break free.
We share the fears, failures, and breakthroughs that come with designing a career and a life that’s truly yours. Because it takes more than promotions or paychecks. You need Personal Capital — the foundation for living life on your terms.
Financial Capital gives you the resources to take risks and invest in yourself.
Reputational Capital opens doors and brings opportunities to your doorstep.
Creator Capital allows you to scale your expertise and impact.
Relational Capital connects you to the people who will elevate and sustain you.
Now, we know relying on yourself isn’t easy. It’s terrifying. It’s staring at a blank page, wondering if you have what it takes to create a legendary category of one.
But that’s why the Category Pirates ship exists — to help you build your own ship.
The hardest part of designing a life and career you love isn’t starting.
It’s starting alone.
All three of us Pirates have climbed this mountain and are now climbing it with you.
Over the next few months, we’ll continue sharing what we’ve learned in order to throw down the rope and guide you. This includes proven frameworks, personal stories, and practical steps. Because as much as we love thinker’s high, theory isn’t enough to become known for a niche you own.
(In fact, this is the most common feedback we get from Category Design Academy students. It takes exercises, conversations, and community to “get” and apply category design principles to your life and business.)
An important note: We’re not distant “experts.”
We’re guides who want to answer any questions you have. This isn’t about envy or separation or “look what we’ve achieved.” It’s about a community of pirates — that includes you! — collaborating to create new and different futures. (You can take the first step by sharing a question in the comments below. 👇)
But this requires a level of openness and vulnerability.
In this conversation, you’ll hear honest truths about what it takes to design a life of radical agency:
Pirate Christopher shares his self-doubt when starting his first company after being thrown out of school and working as an orderly.
Pirate Eddie wrestles with fear as a parent, showing the struggle between wanting his kids to take the traditional path versus designing their own lives.
Pirate Katrina sets up the importance of stepping into your different superpower while building the life you want in real time
This isn’t about frameworks and steps and how-to’s. It’s about humanity. About the courage it takes to say, “I want something different.” And do the work to achieve it.
Here’s how to navigate the conversation.
Key timestamps:
